Who is Hospital Upgrade suitable for?
Hospital Upgrade is ideal for anyone who wants to have the option of semiprivate or private insurance cover in the future You must have already taken out the Hospital Standard Liberty or Hospital Extra Liberty hospital insurance plan and must be under 60 years of age.

With Hospital Upgrade, you secure the right today to choose a higher category of hospital cover in future – without the need for another health check. For greater privacy in hospital, more services and access to leading doctors.
Long entitlement to switch
After taking out Hospital Upgrade, you can take your time deciding whether to switch to a higher category of hospital cover: you can upgrade without another health check once within in a 20-year period from commencement of the insurance. You can switch every two years.
Full cover even with a pre-existing condition
With the individual premium supplement, Sanitas is the first health insurer in Switzerland to offer many people with pre-existing health conditions or consequences of accidents the option to take out supplementary insurance with full cover.

Benefits are granted only in accordance with the Swiss Federal Health Insurance Act (KVG/LAMal) and the corresponding ordinances, and the general terms of insurance and applicable supplementary terms issued by Sanitas.

What are the conditions for taking out Hospital Upgrade?
You can only take out Hospital Upgrade supplementary insurance in combination with the Hospital Standard Liberty or Hospital Extra Liberty hospital insurance plan.
You can apply for Hospital Upgrade up to the age of 60.
The switch to the next-highest category of hospital cover must take place by the insured’s 64th birthday.
Insured risks (illness, accident) and any limitations, restrictions, exclusions or cost share options are carried over following the upgrade in hospital cover.

Under what conditions is the upgrade possible?
An upgrade is possible at the earliest on 1 January following the insured person’s second birthday .
An upgrade is possible at the earliest on 1 January that follows 24 months of cover under the Hospital Upgrade insurance plan .
If Hospital Upgrade has been taken out for a teenager up to 31 December before their 15th birthday, the upgrade to the next-highest category of hospital cover must take place at the latest on 1 January following the 36th birthday at the latest.

Is a health check required to take out Hospital Upgrade?
If you take out Hospital Upgrade at the same time as the hospital insurance plans Hospital Standard Liberty or Hospital Extra Liberty, the health check also applies for Hospital Upgrade. If you apply to take out Hospital Upgrade at a later point in time, a new health check is required.
