What you need to know when terminating insurance

  • Basic insurance

    • Basic insurance is compulsory in Switzerland, so you have to take out basic insurance with another health insurer.
    • The term of contract for basic insurance is one year and runs from 1 January to 31 December. It is automatically extended one year at a time.

    • The notice period throughout Switzerland is 30 November or the last working day in November.

    • If you have taken out the Basic insurance plan with a deductible of CHF 300 (or no deductible for children), you can also terminate the insurance as of 30 June. In this case, your termination must reach us by 31 March or the last working day in March.

    • The date that Sanitas receives the termination applies, not the postmark.

    • You can send us your termination by post, email or via the Sanitas Portal. The best thing to do is send your notice of termination in writing to info@sanitas.com.

  • Supplementary insurance

    • Supplementary insurance is voluntary.

    • The term of contract is one year and runs from 1 January to 31 December. It is automatically extended one year at a time. Specific rules apply for multi-year contracts.

    • The notice period for supplementary insurance throughout Switzerland is 30 September or the last working day in September.

    • The date that Sanitas receives the termination applies, not the postmark.

    • Important: don’t terminate your current supplementary insurance until you have confirmation of admission to your new supplementary insurance plan.

Frequently asked questions

  • I’m moving abroad. What happens with my health insurance?

Anyone who deregisters in Switzerland is no longer entitled to mandatory health insurance in Switzerland. You can find more details on our “Moving abroad” page.

  • I’d like to terminate the insurance of a deceased family member. What do I need to know?

Health insurance ends upon death. Premiums that have already been paid will be refunded to the exact day. To do this, relatives must notify the health insurance company of the person’s death. Find out in detail what you have to do following a death

  • If I stay with Sanitas, how can I save money on my premiums?

The Swiss healthcare system is one of the best in the world. But rising premiums are putting a strain on more and more households. To save money on health insurance premiums, you can adjust the deductible and opt for an alternative basic insurance model. The higher your deductible, the lower your monthly premium. Alternative insurance models for basic insurance offer premium discounts.

See our money-saving tips for more ideas on how to reduce your premiums.

  • Can I terminate my insurance before the official termination dates?

Outside the official periods of notice (basic insurance as of 31 March and 30 November, supplementary insurance as of 30 September), it is only possible to terminate health insurance outside the notice period in case of moving abroad or death.
