Why supplementary insurance makes sense

Basic insurance covers a lot of bases, but not everything. For example: if you’re travelling outside Europe and have to go to hospital in an emergency, this can result in high costs, most of which you have to pay yourself.

78% have supplementary insurance

This is the proportion of the Swiss population that has taken out at least one supplementary insurance plan (according to a comparis.ch survey from 2021).

Frequently asked questions

  • What is supplementary insurance?

Basic insurance covers the most important benefits. Supplementary insurance plans complement basic insurance, covering benefits that are not mandatory, such as contributions to alternative medicine or fitness centre memberships. Basic insurance is compulsory, whereas supplementary insurance plans are voluntary. It’s a good idea to take out supplementary insurance plans early on while you’re still fit and healthy.

  • How do I terminate my supplementary insurance and switch to Sanitas?

Only terminate your old insurance once you have received confirmation of acceptance from Sanitas. You first have to answer the health questions.

The notice of termination or form sent to your current insurer has to be signed in writing by all persons of legal age affected. Please check the exact deadlines with your health insurance company. Further tips are available on this page.

  • Why do I have to answer health questions?

Health insurers use the information provided to decide whether and under what conditions to accept the insurance application.

  • Why does the premium for supplementary insurance increase with age?

Two factors determine the amount of your premium. Firstly, it is adjusted individual, taking your personal health risk into account. Secondly, statistical models are used in the calculation. These show that health risks increase with age.
